Socorro Hail Storm

Here are a collection of image collections taken by students and others around Socorro, NM following a devastating hail storm that pummelled the city center on the afternoon of Tuesday October 5th, 2004.  Starting as a small yet dynamic thundershower, the storm quickly took life with hail before increasing in strength and launching baseball sized hail over a 100 miles per hour at the campus below.  These images document the storm from the start through the initial small hail stones, into the assault, and the storm's aftermath.

- Photos by Kyle Crockett, taken from the Altamirano apartment complex on NMT's campus.  Later photos show damage to his two vehicles, and those of two friends as well as to the structure of the Altamirano building itself and a few of other snaps from around campus.

- Photos by Trista Sloan, taken from her residence in Socorro proper a few blocks from campus.  Images show damage to her car, damage to her roommate's vehicle, and shots from around her property and around town at various stages of the storm.

- Photos by Ryan Snyder, taken from his residence near campus showing damage to his residence and his blue Saturn (Saturn's took heavier damage than any other vehicle type) which was not protected by the car port which was tattered in the storm.

- Photos by Richard Smrt, these images are from the same period as a storm cell similar to Socorro's went through the Albuquerque metro area. Though the hail and damage was far less severe, these images are rather breathtaking on their own.
